2020…The Year That Sucked!

3, 2, 1…Happy New Year! 2020 is going to be a good year!

Well…

The first couple of weeks started okay. My Birthday celebration was subdued but I had a good time. Tish played Chauffeur and took me Brewery hopping in Loudoun Co. Harpers Ferry Brewery was our first stop. Good beer and pizza what more can you ask for. Then we visited two of my favorite in LoCo; Adroit Theory and Belly Love.

At Shelly’s in 2019 & 2020, exactly one year apart.

Shorty and I made our annual trip to Shelly’s Backroom Lounge for drinks and stogies. The Round Robin always comes into play. Shorty mentioned that his yearly outing with his college mates had an opening and wondered if I would be interested. This event is called Whiskey Weekend – okay I’m up for the challenge. An entire weekend of tasting hard to find Whiskeys doesn’t sound bad at all. Yes, of course I took cigars with me.

The week leading up to WW5, there was talk of a shutdown in Va. due to Covid-19. We kind of played it by ear to see whether or not we were gonna have to cancel. As Thursday came, those in charge basically said Screw It, Let’s Do It!

Friday was a meet and greet for me and an overall free for all. Each of use brought a bottle to share; some brought multiple bottles. My expectations were not that high as these guys were 10+ years younger and I was expecting some dark alley craft distillery that was a friend of friends cousin on their mother’s side of the family.

Oh Hell No!

These were some heavy hitters that I have only read about and never had the opportunity to taste. “Help Yourself!” And the fat man did just that.

Here are my greatest hits from Friday evening:

Blantons Gold

Yamasaki 12yr.

Lagavulan 9yr. Game of Thrones House Lannister

Starward Two-Fold Double Grain Australian Whiskey

The latter was my favorite by far. Who ever brought that, if you bring it to WW6 bring 2 – I want one for the road.

I fell into a part-time gig peddling liquor for a few months but found that younger managers don’t appreciate knowledgeable employees who can sell high end booze. They felt threatened and I said: “Bye!”

An old friend told me that a local Vineyard was looking for some help in the tasting room. I’ve poured wine before, I surly can do it again. A new gig was found and I love it.

We were introduced to a new watering hole in Chantilly thanks to Shortie, Eavesdrop Brewing. Good beer and they also host other brews from around the state and that’s not even the best part. Big supporter of cigars!

Next door to this brewery is some of the best eats, Eugene’s Sausages and Fries. With options like Chesapeake Dog,  Elote Fries, El Diablo, Truffle Fries and Pastrami Fries your heart will thank you.

Other than a few random outings; we were put on hold!

Visiting friends and families became hard to do because of a virus that we have never seen, a Pandemic.

Some believe and others think it’s fake. I’m gonna play it safe and respect those experts who are advising us to sit tight and ride it out. My fear is that we will have to wear masks indefinitely.
In that case I might as well be stylish.

So to give ya an overview of 2020, I’ll sum it up in two words:

Damn Coronavirus!

Remember to wear your mask and wash your damn hands!

Be Safe Out There Y’all!

The Country Boy In Me

I’m a country boy and proud of it. Bourbon, Moonshine swilling, Southern Rock listening and lover of the old school staple beers; Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old German and Schlitz. However I do like the finer things in life. As one of my former coworker said: “You’ve got Champagne taste and redneck ways.”

I don’t smoke the cigars of my grandfather or Pop Daily as I called him. El Producto and Grenadier were his go to. I had the pleasure of smoking some Romeo Julieta’s with him before he went on to the next life and I continue to carry on his tradition today. I miss him Z
and wish I had burned more cigars with him.

Growing up in the ‘70s, it wasn’t uncommon to steal a taste of beer from Pappy or Uncle Med. Pabst, Schlitz and Carling Black Label were always in their fridge.

Fast forward to the 2000’s, my proclivity to fine cigars rivals my taste of good bourbon. But drinking the beer of my father, I would have never guessed in a million years I would be a regular drinker of PBR. I love craft beer but when your local store has a limited selection of these craft barley and hops, if you have to pick a regular domestic, you might as well pick one with a Blue Ribbon.

So today’s deck therapy, we are enjoying 50 degree January temps
with an ice cold PBR and an:

Alec Bradley The Lineage

Shape: Robusto
Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Honduran
Filler: Honduran, Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan

Mild essence of leather, creamy with low acid. The draw is nice and has a great mouth feel. This a good stick to pair with a Pilsner, IPA, or even a Stout. High proof bourbons like McKenna 10 yr., Stagg Jr., Weller Antique 107, Weller Full Proof or any of the Col. E. H. Taylor products would also compliment this cigar. A two light stick but worth the trouble and about a 40-50 burn time. This is one I would share with friends who are not big cigar smokers but want to give it a try.

So to all my city friends who wish to channel their inner rednecks, grab ya some PBR and go to your local B&M and pick up some of these sticks and enjoy like hell.

Deck Therapy Sessions

I’m getting ahead of myself, I’ll give you the highlights of 2020 next time. One of the good things that happened; I started working at a local vineyard. It’s only part time but it’s fun and I’m back in the wine industry.

Here’s a review of two local wines and what cigars paired well with them. And 2021 starts Deck Therapy Session with the Fat Man.

D.T.S. 1

Zweigelt North Mountain Vineyard & Winery

An Austrian hybrid grape, which is crossed between a St. Laurent & Blaufänkiach grown in the Shenandoah Valley at North Mountain Vineyard & Winery. North Mountain, known for their Chambourcin, Chardonnay and Grunier Vetliner, are the first to grow Zweigelt in the state of Virginia. Along with their red single varietal, they also use the Zweigelt to produce a dry Rosé.

Deep, bold ruby/garnet in color, with medium to low acids. Dark stone fruit with hints of leather and a bit of earthy undertones on the nose.

Soft mouth feel, bright, balanced, concentrated fruit with a slight touch of Jam and a hint of white pepper on the finish.

It would pair well with pasta, pizza, and a good steak.

This wine shouldn’t be reserved for the colder months – it should be enjoyed year round.

Definitely a cigar wine! And speaking of that. As much as I prefer a Maduro or a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper stogie, I found the perfect stick to compliment this vino:

Hoyo de Monterrey Icon

Shape: Robusto
Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Corojo
Filler: Dominican
Binder: Dominican

Medium bodied, cedar notes, acidity is subtle and a bit creamy. Draw near perfect with soft leather and mild spices. The burn time is about 35 minutes, perfect for your mid-afternoon deck therapy session. Added bonus, a one light stick. Shortie likes that!

D.T.S. 2

2017 Vin Rouge Glen Manor Vineyards

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot & Petit Verdot

Deep dark burgundy in color, medium acids.
Earthy, leather & cigar smoke on the nose.
Black cherry and currants with soft tannins on the finish.
A true afternoon sipper for deck therapy.

It would pair well with a burger and pasta.

I choose the Caldwell Blind Man’s Bluff to enjoy with this Bordeaux Blend.

Shape: Robusto
Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Maduro, Pennsylvania Broadleaf
Filler: Dominican
Binder: Sumatra

Smooth is the key word here. Soft mouth feel with earthy notes that linger. The draw is near perfect with little spice and low acids. This was a 2 light cigar which isn’t a bad thing. Both Cigar and wine were low in acids and complemented each other.

This would be a great cigar for a newcomer to the stogie world. I would also pair this stick with the Willet Pot Still Reserve, Kentucky Bourbon. The mildness of the cigar and the baking spices of this brown water goodness are a perfect combination.

Both deck therapy sessions were a success and much more to come in 2021.

I’ll try to get some friends to join me for these sessions throughout the year.

Y’all be safe ya hear, keep those masks on, social distance when you can and wash those damn hands.

It’s Been Awhile

It’s been a while since my last post – who am I kidding, it’s been almost three years!
And what…you’re expecting me to say a lot has happened in my absence. In reality it has but, not for the best of this good ole boy.

I finally found work and it’s not what I would prefer to end my career. But, it was a job with a corporate juggernaut that just paid the bills without any enjoyment in life. It was actually short lived – I’ve moved on.

However, my hiatus in 30 plus months have lead to some serious debauchery.

Greg revisited the valley from Vienna, Austria and he finally got to savor the wine from Virginia’s Godfather…Linden Vineyard. We also revisited the Green Fairy in Middleburg, Va. per his request and like all those I taken there – good times were had.

My son and I have found a yearly outing in Lake Harmony, Pa. and this event is known as Cigarfest hosted by Cigar International. Two years under our belts and a lifetime of trips will be made. Every cigar lover has to go at least once in their life to this most enjoyable weekend. Hey Shortie, strap on some balls and go with us!

A few weeks later, I ended up in Pittsburgh visiting one of my closest friends who is like a brother, JD. The amount of bourbon I transported to his crib was close to illegal (cue the Smokey and The Bandit music). Heinz Field was hosting an artist that I haven’t seen since ‘96 and I was hoping he was still legit after all these years.

Holy Crap…Garth Brooks is the MAN! Still the best concert I’ve ever seen!

He took me to The Strip and we savored all its wonderful food and beverage offerings. My favorite highlights: Leaf & Bean, The Church Brew Works and the Pa. Libations Store. Fun Times! I almost forgot the Atomic Pepperoni Roll, so good!

Visiting Virginia Vineyards has reached 194 and counting. But I haven’t found anything worthy of my words.

The Va. Brewery count in now past 130 and I haven’t even visited the Richmond area at this point. That issue will be rectified soon.

I have a proclivity for Octoberfest beer and I try my best to taste as many as I can. I tasted 45 in 2018 and 57 different ones in 2019.

Bourbon has become a big part of my balanced diet of late. And by God, that brown water is quite a treat. God Bless the distilled spirits from the Bluegrass state! My son is pushing me to try more Scotch and I’m beginning to see why.

I was asked recently what have been my greatest hits during my time of silence? And I would have to say….

Well first thing…the Nationals won the World Series! I waited 33 years for the return of baseball to the nations capital and only had to wait 14 years to watch a parade on Pennsylvania Ave. I still can’t believe it!

Ankida Ridge Vineyards in Amherst, Va.
This microclimate location is producing some serious Pinot Noir in Virginia! Their Chardonnay is quite good too.

Harpers Ferry Brewing in Purcellville, Va.
When you make a beer called Sell The Team taking shots at D. Snyder it makes me an instant fan.

Country Boy Brewery in Lexington, Ky.
Cougar Bait Pale Ale and Knotty Pine IPA what more do I need to say?

James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington, Ky.
Good Rye & Bourbon with an amazing tour and cocktails afterwards.

Jake’s Cigar Bar in Nicholasville, Ky.
One hell of a selection of bourbon, scotch and stogies. This was found by accident and made the fat man happy.

Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Ky.
Home of Blantons, Col. E. H. Taylor, Eagle Rare and of course Pappy. We will visit again!

And I spent a lot of time with good friends. Something I look forward to doing in 2020

Uh Oh, did I say 2020!?
